Happy #FabricFriday, friends! We were postively thrilled to see famed Décors Barbares textile designer Nathalie Farman-Farma on IGTV with Cabana Magazine’s editor in chief, Martina Mondadori Sartogo this past week. Talk about a power duo of two wildly talented women!
Martina and Nathalie discussed all things inspiration, from elaborately layered caftans to beaded Ukrainian jewelry. Nathalie shared her deep admiration for the humanities, specifically her academic past with the study of classical antiquity, her present admiration for Russian culture, and her new interest in Japan and China. She credits the complexity of her multi-cultural designs to the beautiful cross-pollination of different geographic areas as a result of trade advancement. ‘It’s the trade really. These trade objects [costumes, jewelry, books, bits of ribbon and trim] went all over the world…,’ says Nathalie, as she shares her collection of antique textiles from endless different origins.
Nathalie’s advice to interior designers? ‘Decorate the way you would dress… buy things that you like, move them around. Don’t be too rigid… I do like crazy plants just as a breakup so that things aren’t too pretty.’ Can we get a HELL YES?! This sensibility is precisely why we are so over the moon about representing Nathalie’s exquisite textile line in our showroom—her design work is fresh and unequivocally original, while still managing to portray a historical depth and richness. No easy feat!
