The Therapy of Steam

My master bathroom sucks and Mr. Steam is partly to blame. In no way were any Mr. Steam products used in the design of my bathroom and, alas, therein lies my problem, but unfortunately it goes deeper than that. I have, a-hem, an “issue” with relaxing. On our recent Modenus + BlogTourLA trip, Krista and I had the opportunity to visit the Snyder Diamond showroom in Los Angeles and see many of the Mr. Steam products in action (think scantily clad gorgeous model lolling about in various shower scenarios involving lots of water, steam, aromatherapy, ChromaTherapy, iSteam technology and a throng of BlogTourLA google-y eyed watcher-oners who were taking countless pictures of said model.) Mind you, I like well designed product as much as the next designer, but shower technology that involves hanging out longer in the bathroom is totally lost on me. My master bath is a glorified outhouse, albeit clad in carerra marble, the only modern day luxuries it provides are running water, electricity and a sewer line. Nothing about the space makes me or anyone else for that matter want to hang out in there longer than it takes to get the grime off. Its utilitarian design (mind you not in a Scandinavian, gorgeous kind of way) works for me because I am a wash and wear kinda girl, my entire shower-out-the-door routine lasting no more than 15 minutes. In all honestly, I have worn this bare bones approach like a badge of honor, proud that I am not one who dabbles in the shower and bathroom with all manner of fluff and puff routines. Who needs soap to shave when you have running water?! As it turns out, the joke is sooo on me.

Historically, relaxation involving water, steam and sweat is a longstanding practice dating back to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, where the ruins of the earliest public baths were found. From that point forward, whether in the public bathing houses of Greece or Rome, the volcanic spring-fed onsens of Japan or the sweat lodges and Temazcalli of the Native Americans, the cross cultural tradition to cleanse, purify and relax was culturally embraced. I don't know about you, but this is not my cultural experience in this day and age in which I feel compelled to move at all times and never have enough time to do all that is on my list.

To get their point across about the many documented benefits of relaxing and steam therapy, and why simply taking time to care for yourself is totally worth it physically and mentally, Mr. Steam treated the entire BlogTourLA crew to a Korean Day Spa. That experience, highlighted by being buck naked and scrubbed down with mineral salt head to toe by a small Korean woman in black lingerie, shifted my perspective so profoundly that I am forever changed. What Krista and I witnessed at the spa, as much as what we experienced personally, spoke so eloquently of a culture that values its generational community, and one in which each body is embraced as it is, as part of the collective and beautiful whole. We mingled, bathed and steamed with young and old, with entire families that so palpably cared for each other that it practically brought us to tears. We left knowing that Mr. Steam was on to something, specifically that our overall health and well-being is directly proportional to how often we incorporate regular bouts of relaxation to restore and regenerate our body, mind and soul.

Even though Mr. Steam did not create steam, since 1917 the company has been at the forefront of the technology curve, and is currently the largest manufacturer of electric steam boilers in the world for the U.S. Navy, hospital operating rooms and the Kennedy Space Center. Mr. Steam continues to innovate and as such the company is a leader in the commercial and residential spa experience offering swipe-touch controls, advanced steam shower generators and systems, aromatherapy and ChromaTherapy, and the most advanced towel warmers on the market today. As much as I would like to gut my master bath and start over with my own steam therapy design, the best I can do at the moment is play with Mr. Steam's nifty virtual spa app and to highly recommend steam therapy to our clients, which is shockingly well priced. Who knew?! Price out your own at home spa experience here.

Poggenpohl Perfection

Oh, how we marvel at the smallest of design details. The truth is, the greatest things about design often lie in the seemingly smallest of details and, for us, it is those very details that separate the average from the extraordinary. So when we had the opportunity to spend some time talking with Neil Bailey, US President and CEO of Poggenpohl, one of the sponsors of our recent BlogTourLA trip, it's no wonder we found ourselves hanging on his every word about what differentiates this brand from others. Hint, hint... the perfection is all in the details.

Here are just a few of the things that impressed us most...

1 | The +MOTION mechanism requires only the slightest of touches to open and close drawers, both quickly & quietly. We couldn't stop playing with this feature. You barely have to graze the cabinet and it intuitively opens and closes as if at your command. You feel like a magician!

2 | Interior drawer unit lights switch on automatically when the drawer is opened. What a bright idea!

3 | A ladder for accessing high storage can be hidden behind a cabinet plinth. We love a cleverly stored lift!

4 | Drawer runners are positioned beneath the drawers themselves, enabling more storage within the drawer... and the options available to customize the inside of drawers are mind-boggling--in the best possible way. Organized at last!

We each left the Poggenpohl showroom craving one version or another of an ultra modern, uberly well-designed kitchen from this European master of luxury cabinetry. What about you? Would you ever put a sleek, modern kitchen in your home? Which details are most important to you in your own kitchen?

Isn't this bright & cheery palette wonderful? One of our very cool Ann Arbor clients has an incredibly neutral family room and brought us in to help her layer some color and texture in. We can't wait to see this installed soon.

What is your family room like? Do you gravitate towards neutrals or pops of color?

House Beautiful, November 2013

Press: House Beautiful, November 2013 | CLOTH & KIND

Did you happen to catch Tami's stunning floral arrangement in the new November issue of House Beautiful?

Here's what she had to say about it.... "I was inspired by the warm golden hues of autumn here in the South. I used dried cardoon pods that I grew from seeds collected from Monticello, feather-light dried hydrangea, curly kiwi vine, cotton bolls plucked from a field in Georgia, and gourds cut from the vine - all nestled in a brass vessel."

I've always known that it's Tami's gathered approach to both floral and interior design that make her work so storied. At CLOTH & KIND, our goal is always to mix old with new and to curate the most interesting mix of pieces to fill a space that will tell the story of its homeowners. What a wonderful example this floral arrangement is of that exact notion.

Kelly Wearstler

What an absolute whirlwind it's been since our week in LA as part of BlogTour! I arrived home from Los Angeles last Wednesday, only to turn around the next day and travel for another 5 days for work and then for a wedding.  Not complaining, but man, does it feel absolutely blissful to be back at home with my feet firmly planted in my normal routine after 2 and a half long weeks on the road and away from my family! I'm also super excited to be home so that we can FINALLY start giving you the scoop on our incredible BlogTourLA adventures... and really, where better to start than with one of our design idols, Kelly Wearstler? We spent a whole afternoon at Kelly's design headquarters, able to wander around freely, talk with Kelly and just absorb the beauty of her space. For all of us BlogTour design geeks, the ability to get a sense for Kelly's creative process was an experience we'll not soon forget.

Here's the entry to her space, immediately coming off of the elevator...

The most glamorous conference room ever...

Where the design magic happens (there's Kelly walking by in the background)...

I developed a bit of an obsession over the chairs in her space...

Another chair. Loving that lilac leather paired with antique brass...

Afterwards, we hit the Kelly Wearstler store on Melrose for a little retail therapy and what fun it was...

Tami sipped some tea from Kelly's stunning china...

We all found some bling to bring home....

And it has to be said that Kelly is about the kindest, most sincere person we've met in this business in a long time. She is down to earth, approachable, and wicked-talented. What a combo!

Here's Tami and I with Kelly...

If you haven't yet seen Kelly Wearstler's Proust on Design interview that she did for CLOTH & KIND back in August of this year, you must check it out here. We appreciate her answers even more after having experienced her in person.

A heartfelt thank you to Kelly for opening up her space to us and for being such a gracious host.

Fab Five: Chevron + A $100 Giveaway!

Did you guys catch our guest post over at Annie Selke's Fresh American last week? We had such fun putting this special Fab Five together for them. To learn more about our inspiration for this piece, read on...

It’s no secret that we at CLOTH & KIND have a long-standing love affair with patterns in textiles, and as interior designers, it has become a hallmark of our design aesthetic. While we are drawn to all manner of textile designs, without fail, we always come back to the chevron as a favorite. There is just something essential and noble about the chevron, with its inverted V-shaped motif, in all its variations, that piques our fancy.

Apparently, we’re not the only ones to delight in the zigzag pattern, because it dates back to ancient times, as seen in archaeological recovery of Greek pottery designs, as well as in early rock carvings. Throughout history, the geometric chevron has been commonly used as a military insignia and in the heraldry images of countless coats of arms and flags. To that end, the chevron has become part of our collective consciousness, and it’s no wonder that the pattern is a stalwart fixture in the graphic-design motifs found in many textile designs.

Our Fab Five inspiration started with the intoxicatingly beautiful Dash & Albert Zigzag Multi micro-hooked rug. We were immediately drawn in by the color combinations that when paired with the zigzag pattern create a cheerful graphic punch. We could see this rug working in a variety of settings, lending a playful air to the room.

We have always been fans of all things Arjumand and would likely sell our souls for the Herringbone Cool wallpaper from the Imperial Collection.

And who wouldn’t love one of Caitlin McGauley’s zigzag trays? We love Caitlin’s whimsical hand-drawn chevron motif on white porcelain accented with 22k gold.

And, let’s be honest, Kelly Wearstler nails graphic patterns and has done so again with this Groundworks for Lee Jofa trimming.

And even if you have been living under a rock, it would be hard to miss how much light has been shed on the beauty of wood floors laid in a chevron or herringbone pattern. Hands down, few companies do this with new floors as impeccably as Exquisite Surfaces.

So, what’s your favorite pattern? If it’s chevron, then you’re in luck, as we’re partnering with Annie to offer you a $100 Pine Cone Hill shopping credit, where you can shop all sorts of chevrons. Click HERE to enter over on Fresh American... and best of luck to you!

Haz from ZAK+FOX

You all know how much we admire Zak Profera of ZAK+FOX already, right? So you'll totally get why we're about to oooo and ahhh over his brand new collection titled Haz which is based on the artistry, history and traditions of Anatolia. Haz, which is the Turkish word for enchantment, perfectly describes how we are feeling about these four gorgeous new textiles.

Zak continues to demonstrate that he is a creative superpower, brimming with ideas that somehow bridge ancient and modern, and keep us all wanting more. We had the privilege of seeing the brand new textiles at Nicky Rising while we were out west for BlogTourLA, and oh my god, are they stunning! Go see for yourself, and prepare to be enchanted.
