DXV Design Panel

Earlier this year, we received the tremendous honor of being one of seven design firms invited by DXV, the luxury division of American Standard, to create a space inspired by a classic work of literature.

Water for Elephants by novelist Sara Gruen was the novel we chose. It spoke to us on many levels, but primarily because of the beautifully tragic nature of the love story that unfolded in a third rate traveling circus, at the start of the Great Depression, between Marlena, the heroine and an orphan with no where else to turn, and her lover Jacob, the circus vet. The pages are filled with freaks and clowns, wonder and pain, anger and passion, which created a unique design opportunity for us to imagine what Marlena's only real retreat and refuge - her personal dressing room in a train car - may have looked like.

Marlena's signature color, pink, was a starting point for the creative design that guided the mood for this space. We kicked the design off with a custom wallpaper, the lush and robust leaf and lotus pattern of Shanti by PaperMills in a sultry and shocking hot pink, which we showcased within ebonized wood paneled walls of a traditional train car.

These elements guided many of the design details in both vignettes, with nods seen in the vintage brutalist lotus chandelier, the murano glass leaf sconces and floral pendants, and the custom scroll metal work that we designed on the water closet doors.

As is always the case with us, fabrics tell our story, and thus we incorporated the exotic textiles Lazlo and Idadora, both patterns from Tulu Textiles, and custom tassels and bouillon trim, created for us by our partners at Fringe Market. We envisioned Marlena primping at a vanity with a Hollywood style mirror, our custom designed brass luggage rack above her piled high with all of the necessities of the star of the show, nestled under the arc of the train car ceiling with a dressing screen and steamer trunk at her side.

And then as kismet would have it, we landed on the new DXV Oak Hill Suite including the soaking tub, freestanding sink and toilet paired with the Traditional tub filler and Rain Can shower head for their nod to the Depression Era. We also incorporated several accessories from the Randall collection, including the towel ring, toilet paper holder and robe hook. All of the DXV suites work so well and seamlessly together that it was a cinch to pull from the various collections that we felt best fit our overall aesthetic. And their gorgeous new Satin Brass finish is divine! Everything came together so beautifully, and paired elegantly with the Tempest Tileworks Dublin tile from Filmore Clark that we used for the dramatic backdrop within the shower. This all coalesced into a swanky getaway, a personal oasis for Marlena.

One of our favorite parts of this project, aside from having the total creative freedom provided by DXV to create this space exactly as we dreamed of it, was styling our set with the help of Jim Goulet. Fanciful vintage costumes, precious perfume bottles, beat up old luggage sets, and even a stuffed peacock all became a reality as Jim and his talented team found a way to bring our every whim to life.

Our set design became reality in a way that is so stunningly authentic through the creative vision and talent of photographer Earl Kendall and his team at Quincy Street Studios. Not to mention, Earl's light-filled studio was just about the perfect place to spend three days styling and shooting our set while noshing on scrumptious food, delicious coffee and sweets. We were totally spoiled! We owe a debt of gratitude to every single person involved in building our set.

We couldn't resist this beautiful finishing touch, a nod to the novel's title, a pair of Brass Elephant Handles from our friend Carla Stolper at CF Michaels.

Serious fun! We got all glammed up for a photoshoot that took place on set. Much appreciation and bravado for the talented and lovely Selena Salfen for capturing these swanky images of us, and to the very cool and equally skilled video team that shot the clip you saw at the beginning of this post, Run With Scissors, Inc.

Want to see more behind the scenes from this project? Check out our Pinterest board (which has been our private design & collaboration space for this project, until today when we made the board public!) as well as our Instagram account (use #dxvtopsecret and #clothandkindcircus) to see all of the pics we snapped throughout the course of this project.

Please also be sure to check out the rest of the DXV Design Panel and the incredible work of the other designers, who all nailed it!

We also want to give a huge shout out to our killer intern, Elizabeth Dooley, who contributed so greatly to this project before she graduated from The University of Georgia. This girl is a creative force to be reckoned with, as is evident in her renderings of our space below, and we have no doubt that someday you'll be reading about her in the pages of Elle Decor and House Beautiful.

There are not really words to truly express our thanks to the tremendous team at DXV and American Standard for including us in this visionary project of yours, and for taking our initial design concept (above) to beautiful and perfect completion.

Jeannette Long, Debbie Drury, Margaret Monteleone, Jean-Jacques L'henaff, we've immensely enjoyed this entire process from the very get-go and happily count you amongst our friends. Your product line is exceptional, your design work - visionary, and your team is simply the best. Sincere thanks.

Lastly, Miss V - Veronika Miller of Modenus, whose brainchild this project is, there are no words but you know how we feel about you. #soulsisters

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles // Home for the Holidays

ABOUT THE SHOWHOUSE // Several months ago, we received the distinct honor of being invited to design a space in the prestigious Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles' Home for the Holidays showhouse. The annual showhouse is a one-of-a-kind holiday experience and in 2014 it featured a newly constructed English-style home in Atlanta’s upscale Buckhead neighborhood. The 7,200-square-foot home built by Sheehan Built Homes was inspired by the arts and crafts style developed by Sir Edwin Lutyens of England in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A stone and brick façade carries the steep roof with large windows and cut stone quoins and headers, reminiscent of Lutyens designs, throughout. The interior boasts four bedrooms and four bathrooms along with a study and sitting room. Perched atop a hill, the home’s large-scale backyard is a focal point featuring a heavily canopied landscape.  The luxury home showcases the work of acclaimed local and national designers (eeeek... that includes us!!) who were selected to put their touches on each room to create a true designer showhouse. The home was open to the public for tours in November and early December 2014 and proceeds from the event benefitted the Southeastern Horticultural Society’s Learning Gardens and Farms

ABOUT CLOTH & KIND'S SPACES //  Given the tucked away location of the vestibule and bonus room, on the second floor - above the three car garage, we were inspired to turn the adjoining spaces into an alluring destination in the home - a seductive and modern day speakeasy.  A cheeky nod to the blind tiger, as speakeasies were often referred to during the prohibition era, we swathed the walls of the vestibule in ZAK+FOX’s luxurious Khaden tiger print fabric.  Dark and sultry trim, ceilings and walls in Sydney Harbour Paint’s Jaguar sets the mood and creates the ideal backdrop upon which a myriad of geometric shapes are echoed throughout the bonus room in watery shades of cream, blue & indigo, plum, blush pink and neutral. Just as speakeasies did in their day, the bonus room beckons with promises of lounging and frivolity - cocktails, cards, dancing and an abundance of comfortable seating in an inviting salon.  Paired with a mid-century bar, and a trio of old rail car barstools found on the side of the road, saddling up to the bar has never been so stylish. True to CLOTH & KIND’s vibe, the two spaces are layered with history and heart, with story and substance. The ultimate mix of vintage, modern, textures, art, colors and of course, layers upon layers of unique textiles create the ultimate destination in this stately Habersham home. And, PS, we just had a blast designing these spaces! You can find full coverage of the house, including our spaces, in the February 2015 issue of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine. Please also enjoy these photos, taken by our dear photographer Sarah Dorio, for our Portfolio.

Judging // A Keen Eye for Rugs

You know how we have a thing for textiles, yes? So we are altogether enthralled with the idea of being included on the judging panel for the 2015 Rug Market's America's Magnificent Carpets Award that's taking place this week at the AmericasMart in Atlanta.

Tami will be representing CLOTH & KIND, joined by Robert Brown of Robert Brown Interior Design and Sharian Garner from Sharian Rugs, and will lend her keen eye in selecting best-in-class rugs in several categories. Be sure to watch her Instafeed as there will undoubtedly be some peeks of what she's loving, live from the judging floor.

Once the winners are announced, we'll most definitely let you know and share images of those gorgeous floor coverings with all of our fellow textile addicts out there.

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Showhouse

CLOTH & KIND has been invited to design a room in this stunning new home on Habersham Road for the Atlanta Homes & LifestylesHome for the Holidays showhouse this winter. The dreaming/designing/planning is well underway and we are so excited with the direction our space is taking! Keep your eyes peeled here on our Journal for some sneak peeks at what we're scheming in the coming months... and if you live in Atlanta, be sure to mark your calendars for November 16 - December 7 which is when the house will be open to the public. We'd love to see y'all there!

Remodelista

Beyond honored to have my home featured on Remodelista today as part of their Patterns & Prints edition this week. The lovely photographs were taken by Rinne Allen. Interior design and styling by yours truly + Tami Ramsay, CLOTH & KIND. Many thanks to Margot Guralnick of Remodelista for putting together this thoughtful and comprehensive look at my home and design sensibility!

Lonny + Detroit Home

Hot off the presses! CLOTH & KIND is featured in the new Lonny June 2014 issue as well as the Summer 2014 issue of Detroit Home. A heartfelt congratulations to Lonny market editor, Catherine Dash, who was recently married in Athens, GA. She enlisted Tami (who, if you didn't already know, is a crazy talented floral stylist) and Mandy O'Shea of 3 Porch Farm for the floral design.

Detroit Home graciously included Krista, for her inaugural appearance in this local publication which she loyally reads each month, in their Inspired Designers feature, showcasing her daughter Tahlia's bedroom.

Deep gratitude for including us, Detroit Home & Lonny! xx

LCDQ Legends 2014

You already know from our Textile Files that we're complete and utter Pinterest addicts. So what better way to showcase the evolution of our Legends 2014 window from conceptual design all the way through to the finished space than by sharing the board we created for it? Take a peek at our CLOTH & KIND, Goldfinger LCDQ Legends 2014 board (which has been private up until today) for a complete list of all the sources we used in the design and decoration of our window at Sydney Harbour Paint.

The links on the board will connect you to all of the specific items used, the vast majority of which are for sale. But we also wanted to extend a very heartfelt thanks to the showrooms that worked with us to fulfill our vision for this space by creating custom pieces and/or loaning pieces to us. You guys in the La Cienega Design Quarter ROCK, and it did not go unnoticed the way you welcomed these two out-of-town girls with open arms. This has been an extraordinary experience and we're immensely grateful to count so many of you as new friends.

Indigo Nude // Sally King Benedict Commission

There is no shortage of very unique, highly curated pieces in our LCDQ Legends 2014 window at Sydney Harbour Paint but we are both firmly rooted in the camp that this abstract gold and indigo nude which we commissioned from Atlanta artist Sally King Benedict is the pièce de résistance.

When were were first presented with the invitation to participate in this prestigious design event and told that we could choose any novel to design our window around, we spent several days discussing the literary possibilities. But no matter the subject matter, we kept coming back to the idea of a huge piece of artwork commissioned by Sally for the massive center wall in the space.

Ultimately, we settled on Ian Fleming’s novel Goldfinger as the inspiration for our window for a variety of reasons. First, who does not love the dashing and dapper agent 007 James Bond?! We consider the post-war era of the book a wildly pivotal period for art, furniture and lighting design. It was a time that eschewed the formalism of the 40s and 50s and embraced a non-conformist mix of styles, patterns, periods and colors. This speaks to our design aesthetic fundamentally, and we favor mid-century modernism over most eras of furnishings, for being lean and mean, glamorous and sophisticated. Sally's painting so beautifully captured the spirit we were creating for the space and the gold nude is our personal homage to the iconic women in the novel, Jill Masterson and, of course, Pussy Galore.

We've had a long time, very healthy obsession with Sally and her art. To know her is to love her. Just peruse our Curated column on her and you'll quickly see why. Several people have already inquired and so we are happy to relay that yes, this painting is for sale! Jump on it, guys. Sally's stunning 5' x 7' masterpiece will not be available for long and we'd love to know that this influential piece ofCLOTH & KIND Goldfinger memorabilia ends up in a fabulous home. If you are interested, please contact Sally directly at contact(at)sallybenedict(dot)com.
