This month we’re reading The Dragons, The Giant, The Women - a memoir of a family's search for a place to call home in the midst of the First Liberian Civil War. After successfully completing a harrowing journey to the United States, Wayétu Moore tells the story of her world as a black woman and an immigrant adjusting to her new life in Texas.
Author Wayétu Moore is also the founder of One Moore Book, a non-profit organization that brings visibility to stories and characters from countries with low literacy rates and underrepresented cultures. One Moore Book gives elementary school children the chance to see their culture and physical characteristics in a narrative that they are able to recognize. This organization fosters an equitable environment of engagement with literature and reading, giving children the greatest opportunity to make significant strides in their education.
