This quote is one that we have always kept close to our hearts, but fear that it is often oversimplified. It’s beneficial to understand the history and context behind Audre Lorde’s words before diving into our own interpretations. The first step in building a foundation of understanding for this quote is conceptualizing ‘radical self-care,’ an act that calls for the attentiveness to one’s individual mind and body. Speaking within social norms, women are socialized to care for others. By caring for oneself, a woman can confront the stereotype that she solely exists to give her time and energy to her surrounding environment. Self-care builds sustainable revolutions and social movements—ones that are upheld by individuals built to last. Self-care is ‘revolutionary,’ because it works against oppression and forms of discrimination that attempt to undermine particular identities.

QUOTE // Rumi + FABRIC // Waves in Marine, Rebecca Atwood
The right sentiments, received at the right time, can be like salve for the soul. And we are all about things that lift us up, motivate us and keep the positive energy flowing freely.
With the launch of this new CLOTH & KIND Journal column, Words of Wisdom, we'll be sharing the quotes that speak to us in the most profound of ways... sitting pretty atop a fabric that fits the vibe (but, of course).
Happy Monday... and welcome to our new website! Whadda ya think?
A Zigzag Line
This quote from Emerson is posted on the bulletin board in my creative work space. It reminds me that it takes time to get where I'm going and to try to slow down and enjoy the ride. I'm pretty type A so often times I get impatient and just want to get there already, do you too? But then I take a deep breath and remember this. The words alone are calming to me, but even more so now that I've paired them with this serene painting from sherischart on Etsy layered with Walter G's hand block printed Squiggle fabric. What do you do when you need a reminder to chill out?
